Event description

Description

Inviting all Graduate Students & Teaching Assistants

9:00 a.m. - Continental Breakfast

9:30 - 11:30 a.m. - Bystander Intervention & Social Justice in the Academic Workplace

Graduate students and teaching assistants encounter an array of complex issues related to equity and inclusion in the classroom, graduate lounge and in relationship with academic supervisors. These encounters are often complicated by different individual biases and asymmetrical power dynamics that can give rise to comments and behaviours that may be experienced as prejudicial or harassing. In almost all such situations there are concerned individuals who want to act but don’t, because one of the most important factors in the situation is often overlooked – the role of the bystander.
The goal of this workshop is to acquire knowledge and skills necessary to understand bystander behaviour and encourage effective and safe action that is congruent with the values of equity and inclusion on campus.
