Description

UNICEF Canada’s One Youth Team and Boys and Girls Club of Calgary invite you to the Change Summit. The Change Summit is a call-to-action in communities across Canada to come together and co-create solutions to increase the BELONGING of children and youth. We are bringing together young people as well as adults who are decision makers, work with youth, or are community members. To make Calgary a better place grow up, we need to do it together!

Why are we having a Change Summit?

The Change Summit brings youth and adults together to design solutions to the biggest challenges facing young people in their own communities and in Canada. We want to amplify young people’s voices to influence key decision-makers. We want to build the skills and abilities of children and youth to have greater agency in their own lives and community through human-centred design and inspire young people and adults to work together to design and implement solutions.

What makes the Change Summit process different?

We’ll be using a process called Human-centred design. Human-centred design, also called “design thinking,” is a way of working that helps people understand why things are the way they are, create new ideas and solve problems. When we design, we are trying to really understand things so that we can make them better.

We will do this problem-solving by co-designing with young people—we will build solutions in small testable steps, and then collect feedback so that we can improve our ideas.

Often the people who are experiencing a problem get left out of the problem-solving. We believe that the best people to create the future of child and youth well-being are children and youth working in partnership with caring adults.

What happens after the Change Summit?

By the end of the event, communities will have created a series of possible solutions that they could implement in order to improve young people’s belonging and overall well-being. With our One Youth goal in 2019 to make child and youth well-being a key issue in the federal election, we will leverage the conversations and ideas they generated during the Change Summit to engage with the local and federal government where they have a role to play. We also hope participants will identify the actions they want to take in their communities to improve child and youth well-being, which can take many different forms.

If youth and adult allies are creating solutions, what are the age requirements?

We are inviting youth between the ages of 12 and 24 to attend as youth participants. If you are 25 years of age or older, please register as an adult ally.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

If you have any questions about the event, you can email Alli from the One Youth team - atruesdell@unicef.ca
