Landfill and Composting Facility Tour

Grades: 4-7

Curriculum: Targets the Grade 4 Waste and Our World unit.

Program length: 3 hours. Includes a 90-minute landfill bus tour and a 90-minute composting facility visit.

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Class size: Up to 2 classes, with a maximum of 30 students per class, (60 total) can be booked for the same day.

Cost: No charge for tours, but schools must provide their own bus transportation.

Location: The tour will start at the new composting facility at the Shepard Waste Management Facility (11920- 68 St SE). It will NOT include the recycling centre (MRF).

Bookings: New this year: bookings will be done in two phases. Booking began June 1st for Fall 2017 and September 15th for Spring 2018.

This might be the field trip of the year! Waste educators will lead students through an interactive exploration of how we can all make a difference when it comes to what we throw away. Participants will get a peek inside Calgary's new compost facility from the vantage point of a viewing gallery and participate in activities which highlight the 3 R’s. The bus tour of the Shepard Waste Management Facility (landfill) is geared to demonstrate how The City of Calgary safely and responsibly manages garbage and why our waste diversion programs are so important in reducing the amount of garbage that ends up in the landfill. We will cover topics such as:

  • How to use City programs like Blue Cart and Green Cart.
  • Composting: what it takes to make it happen and why it's better to turn organic material into a rich, valuable soil rather than taking up space in the landfill.
  • Waste reduction and how we can strive for a personal best
  • How to reduce food waste through the lens of our lunches. How a landfill cell is constructed and operates.
  • City of Calgary waste diversion programs
