Speakers - CALL November 3

Nov. 3, 2017— Ottawa West

Dan Brunette—Ottawa Community Foundation
Understanding the Community Foundation
Dan will discuss how the Community Foundation can help your organization connect, apply for grants and funds and much more.

Karen Cooper—Lawyer, Drache Aptowitzer LLP
By-laws: Tips and Traps
Not-for-profit organizations most often consult their by-laws when unexpected or adverse events arise, such as membership disputes, concerns about an errant director, challenges to meeting notices, or voting issues. They are often surprised to find that their by-laws are too restrictive, outdated, do not comply with the law, or do not reflect the organization’s current practices. This session will focus on by-law best practices and how to ensure your by-laws are clear, compliant, flexible and tailored to best meet your organization’s specific needs.

Jeffrey Miller—Accountant, GGFL Chartered Accountants
Dealing with the CRA, and Mitigating Other Risks Charities Face - an accountant's perspective
Familiarize yourself with the potential red flags to the CRA, what they look for when conducting an audit, and learn about the greatest risks that charities face and how you can mitigate them in this information session presented by Jeffrey Miller, Partner, GGFL.

Raquel Chisholm— Lawyer, Emond Harnden
Myth Busting in Employment Law
In employment law, “not knowing” can hurt you.  The truth is that the greatest risk of liability for any not-for-profit comes from its employees.  This session will dispel the top three myths in employment law so that participants will be better able to avoid these liabilities and use the law proactively to create a stable and productive workplace.  Topics will include the risks in using successive fixed term agreements and an employer’s legal obligations in the unfortunate event of a termination.
