Calling all Citizen Scientists! Placemaking data collection

We need your help!

We are looking for volunteers to be Citizen Scientists. We want to understand and make transit spaces better for our communities.

We are gathering baseline data for Placemaking opportunities at transit stations. Placemaking is about how we can shape public spaces and strenghten the connection between people and places. It is about promoting great urban design as well as connecting the physical, cultural and social identities of a community.

We have adapted a Gehl Institute Metric to be the tool by which we collect data. An example of the type of information we are looking to collect is number of people staying in a public space, what they are doing (posture and activity), and number of people transitioning through a space. The collection will be done in small groups through observation, marking findings on a provided form.

This is a great way to learn about Gehl’s approach to making public life an intential driver for design, policy and governance and how to develop an understanding of Community Placemaking in Calgary. Most of the data collection will be done indoors but please be prepared to dress warm and be outside for some of the duration of your shift. You will be assigned your study location and small group during the training at the begining of your shift.

Volunteer commitment: two-hour time block at Westbrook LRT station, training will be provided on site.

**At completion of this volunteering opportunity hours may be used toward professional development hours and/or volunteer hours. We will provide necessary documentation.
