About this Event

“Calling in” Workshop with SURJ

“Calling out” is an empowered interruption of violence and common in many progressive circles. It’s great because it demands accountability. The problem is, it also involves shaming, dehumanization, alienation and it inadvertently creates a culture of fear. In other words, calling out is useful for fighting "enemies" but it is not useful for building communities.

“Calling in” is another option. It demands accountability while valuing the connection between all of us. It cultivates dialogue, patience, and compassion (when compassion is the hardest). It isn’t right for every situation, but when it is, it has great potential to increase understanding, right injustice, heal hurts, and deepen trust.

Come explore and practice the skills and scripts of calling each other in.

ABOUT THE HOSTS:

Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ) Toronto is a local chapter of an international organization committed to moving white people and communities into action to support racial justice movements as part of a broader multi-racial majority. As settlers on Indigenous land, we commit to working towards decolonization and Indigenous sovereignty. We work to support and collaborate with local and national racial justice and decolonization organizing led by Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) organizers.

Through each of our active teams, SURJ Toronto will provide spaces to develop consciousness and analysis, engage in political education, and build skills to act with accountability for racial justice alongside BIPOC-led organizing. SURJ Toronto aims to carry out this mission within Toronto and beyond, with a specific focus on issues and action related to the GTA and Canada more broadly.
