Event description

Description

In Partnership with the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada and the Canadian International Council - Vancouver Branch, please join us for a discussion with Donald Campbell, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Personal Representative for G8 Summits (1997-2000), and Deputy Minister of International Trade (1989-1993) in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, during the original NAFTA negotiations. Returning from the Asia Pacific Economic-Cooperation (APEC) 2017 meetings in Vietnam, we will hear Mr. Campbell’s insights from the summit, and where the Trade Pacific Partnership (TPP) stands after the U.S. pulled out of the talks. Plus, we will hear Mr. Campbell’s deep understanding of the NAFTA Agreement, its renegotiations, how it intertwines with the TPP, and how Canada may benefit from the current crisis as we have recently witnessed a lot of fracturing of alliances and strategic relationships internationally, that were once considered relatively stable.

Donald Campbell is Senior Strategy Advisor to the Canadian national law firm DLA Piper Canada LLP, Co-Chair of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), Chair of the Canadian Committee of PECC, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He was formerly Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Personal Representative for G8 Summits (1997-2000), as well as Deputy Minister of International Trade (1989-1993) in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In his career in the Canadian foreign service, Mr. Campbell held posts as Canada’s Ambassador to Japan (1993-1997); Assistant Deputy Minister (United States) (1985-1989); and Canada’s Ambassador to South Korea (1984-1985). Earlier diplomatic postings included Kenya, the United Kingdom, Jamaica and the United States. Mr. Campbell entered the private sector as Group President of CAE, a Canadian high technology company, from 2000-2007.
