About the Speakers

Mr. Yılmaz Arısoy, Member of the Board of Auditors of the Turkish Capital Markets Association and Chief Executive Officer of Yapı Kredi Yatırım

Yılmaz Arısoy is the CEO at Yapı Kredi Yatırım, a leading investment and brokerage company in Turkey. Mr. Arisoy began his career as a financial analyst at Koç Holding Finance Group in 1997. He later continued in investment banking at Lehman Brothers in New York, and at UBS Investment Bank. He had managerial duties in consumer finance at Capital One Bank in Virginia, USA. He returned to Turkey in 2006 to work at Yapı Kredi Bank, as the Head of MIS and Business Planning. He was appointed as the Chief Financial Officer at UniCredit Bank Slovenia within the Central Eastern Europe Division of UniCredit Group in 2010. Mr. Arısoy joined Yapı Kredi Yatırım in 2014 and worked as a Deputy General Manager (EVP) in charge of Finance and Operations. He was appointed as the CEO and a member of the Board of Directors at Yapı Kredi Yatırım in January 2019. He holds a BSc degree in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University, and an MBA degree from the Johnson School at Cornell University. Linkedin:

His Excellency Jamal Khokar, Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Turkey

HIs Excellency Jamal Khokhar has been Canada’s Ambassador to Turkey since November 2019. Concurrently, he is accredited to Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. From 2010-2015, he was Canada’s Ambassador to Brazil.

As a senior career diplomat with Global Affairs Canada, his other key appointments included being Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean where he was responsible for the full range of Canada’s bilateral engagement in the region. In this capacity, he was instrumental in developing Canada’s Americas Strategy. Later, he was the Regional Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), where he redesigned and oversaw bilateral development assistance programming in region. This included oversight for programming in Haiti at the time of the 2010 earthquake, then Canada’s second largest bilateral aid program. Other notable international assignments included serving five years at Canada’s Embassy to the United States, in Washington D.C., as Deputy Head of the Economic and Trade Policy Section; and, later as Minister-Counsellor and Head of the Congressional and Legal Affairs Section. Foreign assignments also included Lagos, Nigeria, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Richard Carleton, CEO of the Canadian Securities Exchange

Richard Carleton was appointed CEO of the Canadian Securities Exchange in July 2011. During his tenure, Richard and the CSE team led a re-capitalization of the exchange in 2012-2013 and established relationships with key influencers in the Canadian securities industry and beyond. These efforts positioned the exchange to take a leading role in the provision of public capital to entrepreneurial companies; from 2014 on, the CSE set a series of records for new listings, capital raised by issuers and trading turnover. An early advocate for the cannabis industry, the CSE is now the global exchange leader in the listing of issuers in the space. Recognized by the Financial Post Magazine as one of Canada’s “25 Cannabis Industry Power Players”, and a recipient of the American Trade Association’s “Captain of Industry” Award in November 2018, Richard is a frequent speaker on early stage company finance issues around the world.

A member of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1987, Richard is a graduate of the University of Ottawa (B.A. ’81) and the University of Toronto (LL.B. ’85). He has also completed the executive development programme at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Brendan Caldwell, CEO of Caldwell Securities

Brendan Caldwell is the President & CEO of Caldwell Investment Management Ltd. (“CIM”). Brendan has lead multiple-award winning teams and, over the years, was a lead Portfolio Manager on industry recognized mutual funds. He is also co-Portfolio Manager of Caldwell’s private equity related investments, including Urbana Corporation and the Caldwell Growth Opportunities Fund.

Brendan earned his B.Sc. from Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1991 and his M.A. in English Literature from the University of London, England, in 1992. Brendan has held his Chartered Financial Analyst (“CFA”) designation since 1995.

Often interviewed for his insights into current economic issues and in regards to Caldwell’s role as an active investor in global securities exchanges, Brendan is a regular financial commentator and an industry consultant on numerous media outlets. Brendan is currently on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Securities Exchange (“CSE”).

Baris Ozyetis, Assistant Vice President, Sustainable Investing Solutions, Mackenzie Investments

Baris is responsible for the development and management of Mackenzie’s growing and robust shelf of sustainable solutions focused on thematic and impact mutual funds and ETFs. In his role, Baris regularly liaises with a wide range of stakeholders to bring to market ideas that will resonate with Canadian investors and promotes the performance plus impact proposition of Mackenzie’s sustainable solutions. He joined Mackenzie Investments in 2016 to lead the inside sales teams in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces.

Baris is an advocate for several causes across Mackenzie. From 2018-2020, he was co-chair and a key member of Mackenzie’s Green Committee, a committee focused on raising awareness and action for the environment. In 2020, he became a member of Mackenzie’s Partners-in-Action Committee focused on promoting gender diversity. In 2021, he was named co-chair of this committee.

Baris has over 19 years of experience in the financial services industry and holds an Honours BA from the University of Toronto, majoring in Economics.

Nurhan Aycan , Partner, Gowling WLG

Nurhan Aycan is a partner in Gowling WLG's Toronto office and a member of its Corporate Finance, M&A and Private Equity groups. Nurhan also heads the Turkish desk at Gowling WLG. Nurhan has over 20 years of experience in dealing with Canadian and International corporate and commercial matters with a particular focus on assisting high growth companies.

Nurhan's experience as a former general counsel for a large high growth multinational plastic-products company, and as managing director for an international private equity fund focused on distressed turnaround situations, gives him a unique set of credentials to act for multinational clients in a diverse range of industry sectors. Nurhan is rated as a Top 50 lawyer in each of the mining, energyand infrastructure sectors by a major Canadian legal directory and he frequently lectures on Canadian securities law, public and private mergers and acquisitions and resource sector matters.

In addition to his work as outside counsel for large multinational corporations with operations in Canada and internationally, Nurhan also sits on the board of various client companies as well as on three not-for- profit registered charities, including one which is rated one of Canada's top 25 charities.

Most recently Nurhan assisted Virtus Mining Ltd. and Trafigura Ventures B.V. in connection with the plan of arrangement transaction with Turkish mine operator Aldridge Minerals Inc.

Nurhan received his BA from the University of Toronto in 1987, and his JD from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1992. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1994.

Brent Osborne, Partner, Deloitte

Brent is a Partner in the International Tax Group, located in Burlington, Ontario. His practice is centered on providing international tax solutions that enhance returns on invested capital while complementing a corporation’s business strategy. Brent ensures tax compliance services for his clients are delivered with the highest quality.

Brent serves a wide variety of clients, including several foreign-based multinational businesses whose operations have expanded to Canada, utilizing various holding structures. He has developed a strong reputation for providing excellent client service by providing accurate, timely, and responsive advice, all a result of his deeply rooted passion for serving his clients in tax. You can count on Brent being on the ground regularly.

Badar Shamim, Vice President, Portfolio Manager, Generation PMCA Corp.

Badar Shamim has served as Vice-President and Portfolio Manager of Generation Portfolio Management Corporation since May 2017. In this capacity, he provides customized goals-oriented investment solutions to high-net-worth investors and corporate clients while also contributing to Generation’s research and asset management processes. Additionally, Mr. Shamim serves as President of CANADUS International Consulting, where he advises new-to-Canada businesses on market entry and growth strategies to help businesses grow in the Canadian market. Previously, he worked with TD Wealth for 17 years as a financial planner and investment advisor.

Mr. Shamim is an active volunteer, serving as a member of the board of directors of the Canada-Turkey Business Council, Co-chair of the Canadian-Pakistani Friends of Osler which aims to support the staff of his local healthcare system by promoting awareness of the systems workings and needs, as well as Director of the International Service Committee of the Rotary Club of Brampton which has seen his club partner with other Rotary partners in India, Pakistan and Mexico to support a variety of local social development projects. Mr. Shamim has also served on the Brampton Board of Trade, having been Vice Chair of International trade from 2013 to 2015 during which time he created an international trade strategy for the BBoT, before transitioning into the role of Past Chair 2016 in which he advised the incoming executive.

Mr. Shamim holds an Honours BBA from Brock University, as well as being Certified as both a Canadian Investment Manager and Certified Financial Planner.
