Event description

Description

In conjunction with NSERC's Science Odyssey, we are hosting a week of special tours! Come visit the Canadian Light Source, Canada's only light source research facility. Learn about our history, how it all works, and the amazing research scientists from around the world have done!

Find out how scientists from around the world have:

  • Created a technique to turn any blood into a universal type resembling O
  • Identified the double helix structure of RNA, fifty years after scientists first hypothesized it
  • Developed techniques to image plants and our living world in an unprecedented way
  • Designed the first synchrotron experiments aimed at making oil extraction cleaner and more efficient

Special Event:

Wednesday, May 16 is the UNESCO International Day of Light, and we are planning a special event which will take the place of the special evening tour on this day. Check back here soon for more information!

Powered by NSERC, Science Odyssey is a ten-day national campaign of discovery and innovation. It celebrates Canadian achievements in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by bringing together hundreds of events and science outreach leaders to deliver fun, engaging and inspiring activities to Canadians of all ages.

FAQs

How long is the tour?

The tour is approximately one hour long.

Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?

There are no minimum age requirements for the tours! Anyone and everyone is welcome, though the tour is geared towards guests nine years and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Are there mobility requirements to the event?

There are steps to go up and down to the tour site, but if mobility is a concern for you, we do have an elevator available! The tour itself will involve roughly an hour of alternating slow walking and standing.

We will have free parking located in the lot in front of the facility for the purposes of this even, and there are some paid public parking lots located nearby on campus as well. The nearest public campus lot is Lot #4, within easy walking distance of the facility.

Is photography permitted at the event?

You are more than welcome to take photos during the tour! Please tag us @canlightsource on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

This is perfectly fine. The tickets are specifically for tracking numbers of guests. As long as the total number of guests is correct, then transferring the tickets between people is not an issue for us.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

If you have questions, please e-mail outreach@lightsource.ca, or call (306) 657-3644.

NOTE: Promotional photography may be taken during the tour, which may be used in an official capacity by the Canadian Light Source. If you would prefer not to have your photograph taken or published, please let us know!
