Lest We Forget: Canadian Sacrifices on the Western Front, Belgium WW1 1914-1918
OUR SPEAKER: Charles (Chuck) GerhartChuck was born and raised in Mannville Alberta. He attended the University of Alberta and obtained a Degree in Pharmacy and a Masters in Business Administration. He was a Member of the UofA's Naval Training Division, attached to HMCS Nonsuch, and served in the Naval Reserve until he retired as a Sub Lieutenant when Nonsuch was decommissioned in 1964. Chuck married Myrna Whiston, also from Manville, 56 years ago. They have 3 children, four Granddaughters and one Grandson. Chuck worked with Woodward’s Department Stores as a Pharmacist and Manager of Drugs and Cosmetics. After completion of his MBA, a career of 36 Years with the Hudson’s Bay Company followed. Most of his career with The Bay was in Regional Management positions in Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Toronto. Chuck embraces a philosophy that one should give back to the communities you live in this led to many varied volunteer positions over the years. He spent twelve years on the Board of the Friends of the University of Alberta Hospital, including six as Chair of the Board. He was a Member of the River Ridge Senior’s Golf Group Board of Directors for 10 years, and President for two. He remains a Member of the Edmonton Gyro Club where he is the current Past President. Most natably, Chuck is an engaged and contributing Board Member of the Canadian Club of Edmonton. His leisure activities are varied from Bridge, Golf, Curling, and taking in performances by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at the Winspear. Travel has become an important activity in Chuck's retirement, both to visit family in Victoria, Squamish, and Wellington, NZ, and to experience different cultures around the world. His top priority currently is to spend as much time as possible with his Children and Grandchildren, and to be a part of their lives as they grow up and experience life’s challenges. Needless to say, this has been difficult recently with COVID.
