Description


Develop food skills, knowledge and confidence to plan, prepare and serve healthy meals and snacks in a positive eating environment for children under 5 years of age as outlined in Ottawa's Healthy Eating and Active Living Guidelines for Childcare.

This is a 6-module training offered by Ottawa Public Health in collaboration with Algonquin College Continuing Education Hospitality Studies. Topics covered will include:

  • Child Care Healthy Eating Guidelines
  • Legislated Nutrition standards
  • Canada's Food Guide for toddlers and preschoolers
  • Menu planning and healthy food choices
  • Reading food labels
  • Operations such as food costs & procurement
  • Time management
  • Managing food allergies




REGISTRATION INFORMATION

This training has 6 workshops which run twice per week and a Food Handler Certification Course and exam. The workshops will be facilitated by a registered dietitian from Ottawa Public Health and a chef educator from Algonquin College. You must attend all 6 workshops and provide proof of food handler certification to receive a certificate of completion.

  • Module 1: Tuesday November 14 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Module 2: Thursday November 16 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Module 3: Tuesday November 21 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Module 4: Thursday November 23 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Module 5: Tuesday November 28 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Module 6: Thursday November 30 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Food Handler Certification

  • Tuesday December 5 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday December 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
