Event Details

Canada is only weeks away from becoming the first developed country to legalize marijuana. This is by and large a good thing. But what lies ahead for communities of users and growers as the new legal framework for use and distribution rolls out in the coming years? In this inaugural Talking Points event, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) hosts a moderated discussion on who wins and who is left out of Canada’s budding cannabis marketplace.

Speakers include:

  • John Akpata, Ottawa-based spoken word artist and long-time marijuana activist

  • Alyssa O’Dell, CCPA media officer and former corporate lobbying reporter for the Hill Times newspaper

  • Yavar Hameed, human rights lawyer with Hameed Law

  • Trina Fraser, co-managing partner at Brazeau Seller Law and head of the firm’s CannaLaw® group

The discussion will be moderated by Monitor Editor Stuart Trew. An audience Q&A session will follow.

Refreshments (non-alcoholic) will be served. Fun and informative debate will be had by all.

Time: Thursday, June 21 at 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Place: 25One Community (251 Bank Street, 2nd floor)

This event will be filmed and recorded.

Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives

The CCPA works with top-notch researchers on the key issues facing Canada. Whether it’s the growing gap between the rich and the rest of us, the push to privatize our health care system, or gas companies gouging us at the pump, we set the record straight.

We work on solutions that show Canadians’ best values are not only possible, they’re practical. We start with some basic principles—human dignity and freedom, fairness, equality, environmental sustainability, and the public good—and show that we can afford to build a more just and sustainable Canada.

Our national office is in Ottawa, and there are provincial offices in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
