The Community Drug & Alcohol Strategy is pleased to host Sundeep Gokhale and Matthew Badrov, employment and labour lawyers from SHERRARD KUZZ LLP, who will lead a half-day session on the implications of cannabis legalizations and workplace policy.

1. Cannabis in the Workplace

  • Employer rights and obligations regarding cannabis and other impairing substances.
  • The significance of medical vs. recreational use of cannabis.
  • Understanding how to accommodate the use of medical cannabis in the workplace and when the duty to accommodate is engaged by a substance use disorder.
  • Workplace drug testing and when it is (and is not) permissible.
  • Discipline and termination of employment for drug and alcohol use and impairment in the workplace.

2. Workplace Policies

  • Practical tips on developing and implementing workplace policies, including a drug and alcohol policy.
  • Understanding what policies may be mandatory under Ontario workplace legislation, and what policies are recommended.
