Our house, called “Casa Om,” has always been a place of regeneration and creativity. With this in mind we have created an intimate, outdoor performance space in our backyard where artists will have the chance to share their work at a grassroots level. As presenters we strive to give artists a platform where they have the freedom to experiment and share work that is deeply meaningful to them, and we feel passionate about creating an alternative and unique environment from which to share this art with our community.

This season, we are delighted to announce that we will again present two separate programs:

- The Dance Deck Quatre (August 5th & 6th)

and

- The Dance Deck Cinq (August 26th & 27th).

Both exciting and ambitious and each with a uniquely different lineup of established professional artists:

The Dance Deck Quatre

August 5th and 6th, 2017 (4:00pm-6:00pm):

A new creation by Serge Bennathan featuring Gilbert Small and Stephanie Cyr


Serge Bennathan was the artistic director of Toronto’s Dancemakers from 1990 to 2006. He lives in Vancouver where he created Les Productions FIGLIO. In the repertoire of Les Productions Figlio are: The Invisible Life of Joseph Finch a play with actor Jonathon Young. Manga, a duet for Susie Burpee and Linnea Swan. Slam for a Time Traveller a commission from Dancing on the Edge Festival. The Strange Adventure of Myself a solo performance for Sylvain Senez. Conversations, a play about an imaginary encounter between Federico Garcia Lorca and his murderer Juan luis Trescastro for Billy Marchensky and danny Wild.

Serge also created work for SFU ,Vancouver, LADMMI, Montreal, Ballet BC. DanseEncorps, Moncton, The School of Contemporary Dance, Ottawa, Mocean Dance, Halifax, Modus Vancouver.

Working in Opera, he was recently in Geneva, Houston and Chicag

In 2015: M. Auburtin, a new full-length work for his company Les Productions Figlio, Co-produced by the Dance Centre and the Chutzpah Festival 2015 and Sable Island for Mocean dance in Halifax.

His creation Elles received the 2012 Rio Tinto Alcan Award.

Serge wrote a libretto, The Flight, an Opera to be created with Gareth Williams, composer based In Edinburgh.

In 2016, between others was created Just Words, a creation with Hilary Maxwell, Karissa Barry and Serge Bennathan that premiered April 27th at The Firehall Theatre in Vancouver.

In the fall of 2016 Just Words went to Ottawa and Toronto.

In Project for Les Productions Figlio :

June 2017: First stage of the creation, Contes Cruels. It will be presented at the Dancing on the Edge Festival the 13th and 15th of July as a work in progress.

July 2017: Creation of a new work to premiere the 5th and 6th of August at Dance Deck, Vancouver.

Also a writer and a painter, Bennathan has written and illustrated four books: Julius le piano voyageur, published by the French-language publishing house Le GREF in Toronto, The Other Moon of Mr. Figlio, A Few Thousand Miles, a collection of poems about dance, dancers and the dance of life.

His paintings reflect the poetry of the human soul; its dreams, imagination and humour.

Recent Awards:

2012: Recipient of the Rio Tinto Alcan Award

2014: Recipient of the Canada Arts Council’s Jacqueline Lemieux Award.

June 2017: Recipient of the Isadora Award.

There will be an informal dinner reception for audience and performers offered in our house and yard after the show where you can purchase a delicious homecooked meal to further support the artists. We would love to have you stay, meet the artists, and celebrate with us!


Getting here:

~ The #20 bus route comes directly here! Get off at Commercial Drive and Napier Street.

~ Please note that regular street parking guidelines will be in effect. There are meters on Commercial Drive and on the side streets. Some free parking is available on Salisbury St (one block east of Commercial). There is no parking in the back alley or in the permit parking zones.
