Event description
Exploring Ryerson University’s Modernist Fashion Collection: Practice-Based Analysis and Digital Preservation

About this Event

The Modernist Fashion Collection (MFC) contains an intriguing assemblage of ephemeral dress artifacts held by Ryerson University’s Modern Literature and Culture Research Centre. At the intersection of fashion studies, theories of collections, and digital practice, this lecture argues for the importance of saving and studying fashion objects such as these that appear heavily worn and even damaged by the bodies who were dressed by them. The MFC will be explored as a case study, focusing on garments and accessories as tools for interpreting Canadian modernist fashion history. Centrally, this lecture also considers how new digital modes of engagement such as 3D scanning and laser mapping can offer support for the continued conservation of material artifacts across fashion and historical studies in the twenty-first century.
