CCFSO AGM to be held on January 15, 2019. Followed by a special presentation by Stephen Chappell on his recent return from China visiting the Norman Bethune Trail.

Stephen Chappell, Former English Teacher in China (2005-2015)

In the spring of 2018 Mr. Chappell was invited to take a fascinating journey covering four counties in Hebei Province, China to retrace the footprints of Dr. Norman Bethune. Bethune, a Canadian physician, died in China in November 1939 applying his surgical skills to help the Chinese during the Sino Japanese War (1937-1945). He is revered by Chinese people. Stephen’s presentation will share that journey with us focusing on important sites where Bethune lived and worked.

Stephen, a graduate of Carleton University(Economics) spent most of his career in the restaurant business. However, in 2005, after obtaining a certificate to teach English as second language, he headed to China. For 8 of the 10 years he was there, Stephen taught at Anqing Normal University, Anqing, Anhui Province. In 2013 he was awarded the Huangshan Friendship Award, the highest award given to a foreigner by the Province of Anhui. This award is given annually to recognize the contributions of foreign experts to the development of Anhui.

Stephen retired from teaching in 2015 and now makes his home in Ottawa. He continues to maintain and share his interest in China and Chinese culture. He is a member of CCFSO and currently on the Ottawa Canada-China Film Festival Committee.
