Biographies 

 

General Jonathan Vance joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1982. Following his graduation from Royal Roads Military College in 1986, he was commissioned as an infantry officer into the Royal Canadian Regiment.

General Vance's distinguished career includes serving with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Royal Canadian Regiment, where he commanded at all levels within the field force from platoon commander to brigade commander and as Joint Task Force Commander.


General Vance commanded the Second Battalion, the Royal Canadian Regiment in Gagetown, New Brunswick from 2001-2003. He also commanded 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Edmonton from 2006 to 2008, and subsequently, deployed as Commander Joint Task Force Afghanistan and Task Force Kandahar in 2009 and again in 2010.

Following his tours in Afghanistan, General Vance served on the Army Staff as Chief of Staff Land Strategy, and as Director of Staff, Strategic Joint Staff in National Defence Headquarters. Before assuming his most recent responsibilities, he completed a tour of duty as Deputy Commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples in July 2014.

He assumed his position as Commander of the Canadian Joint Operations Command in September 2014. As part of his duties, he has overseen both the air and ground deployments against the so-called Islamic State as well as Canada's contribution to NATO in response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine.

On April 27, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the upcoming appointment of General Jonathan Vance to succeed General Tom Lawson as Chief of the Defence Staff to take effect on 17 July 2015. General Vance holds a Bachelor of Arts in Military and Strategic Studies, Royal Roads Military College (1986) and a Master of Arts in War Studies, Royal Military College (2004).

Lieutenant-General Chris Whitecross enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1982, joining the Canadian Military Engineers after spending 4 years in the Cadet program. Her postings have taken her from Germany to almost every province in Canada. Staff duties have included postings as A4 Airfield Engineering Operations at 1 Canadian Air Division, Winnipeg; Executive Assistant to the Chief of the Air Staff at National Defence Headquarters, Ottawa; Director of Infrastructure and Environment Corporate Services for the Assistant Deputy Minister (Infrastructure and Environment), and as Joint Engineer for Canada Command. Her various assignments have included: G1/G4 for the Force Engineers, United Nations Protection Force, in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia; Wing Construction Engineering Officer, Greenwood; Commanding Officer, 1 Construction Engineering Unit, Moncton; Commander, Joint Task Force (North), Yellowknife, NWT; Deputy Commander, Canadian Operational Support Command, Ottawa; and Deputy DCOS Comms, ISAF HQ, Kabul Afghanistan.

 

Lieutenant-General Whitecross has a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from Queen's University and a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from the Royal Military College. She is a graduate of both the Command and Staff College and the Advanced Military Studies Course, both conducted at the Canadian Forces College. She is a recipient of the Order of Military Merit and was awarded the US Defense Meritorious Service Medal for her service at ISAF HQ.

 

Lieutenant-General Whitecross was posted into the position of Chief of Staff for Assistant Deputy Minister (Infrastructure and Environment) and appointed Chief Military Engineer of the Canadian Forces at National Defence Headquarters on 9 August, 2011. Following the release of the Deschamps Report, she was appointed Commander of the Canadian Forces Strategic Response Team on Sexual Misconduct and is now Chief of Military Personnel. She was promoted to her current rank on 26 May, 2015.
