 Biography / biographie 


J. Michael Cole (b. 1975, Quebec City) is an associate researcher at the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC) in Taipei, a senior non-resident fellow at the China Policy Institute, University of Nottingham, and a senior member of the Thinking Taiwan Foundation, where he serves as editor in chief of www.thinking-taiwan.com. He was deputy news editor and a journalist with the Taipei Times from 2006-2013 and an analyst with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) from 2003-2005. He has a master's degree in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), a B.A. in English literature from Concordia University, the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance from the Centre for International Health and Cooperation at Fordham University, and the CX-77 diploma from the Lester Pearson International Peacekeeping Centre. He is the author of Officially Unofficial: Confessions of a journalist in Taiwan (2014), Democracy in Peril: Taiwan's struggle for survival from Chen Shui-bian to Ma Ying-jeou (2009), and Smokescreen: Canadian security intelligence after September 11, 2001 (2008). He is currently editing his next work, a collection of essays about Taiwanese social movements titled Black Island, and at work on a book about future conflict in the Taiwan Strait. Cole is also a columnist for The Diplomat, a correspondent for IHS Jane's Defence Weekly, Jane's Navy International and Jane's Intelligence Review, and has published in the Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, National Interest, CPI Blog, China Brief (Jamestown Foundation), Ottawa Citizen, Military Balance (IISS), Asia Today International, and several other publications. He appears regularly on Al-Jazeera and the BBC, and has briefed foreign diplomatic missions in Taiwan as well as the U.S.-China Security and Economic Commission (USCC).
