Event description
Paper Covers Rock is a new annual readers and writers festival on Salt Spring Island, BC, taking place October 1-3, 2021.

About this event

“There is no air in the City but there is breath…” - Toni Morrison

In structures that house us along roads that rise toward new locations, everyday we occupy land and form spaces socially. When we are stuck in one place often there are chances to observe those elements of the world that continue to pass us by. Artists can become entangled in the observation of place. Characters may form in relation to location or a location may form its very own character.

Working from your own observations and choices regarding place or places, we will consider visiting, impressions, mark making and invention while wayfinding within the different ecological conditions of our writing projects. This workshop will include visual, aural and haptic examples from contemporary art to gain new perspective and insight onto our situated practices.

--

Cecily Nicholson, from rural and small-town Ontario via Toronto and South Bend, relocated to the Pacific coast two decades ago. She works with the Surrey Art Gallery and is a member of the joint effort prison abolitionist group.

Nicholson is the author of Triage, which considers her work in service industries, organizing and art. Her second work, From the Poplars, won the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and her most recent book, Wayside Sang, which considers the trajectories of her birth father and his labour in the Windsor-Detroit area, won a 2018 Governor General’s Literary Award.
