Maximizing Philanthropy’s Impact for a Sustainable Future

The news of environmental, social, economic and political challenges facing Canada and our broader blue planet is relentless, dispiriting and often numbing. While often discouraging, we learned at the 2018 CEGN conference that disruption opens up the opportunity for creativity, innovation and change. Acutely aware of this context, CEGN’s annual gathering in May will be designed to help us step back from the fray; take a deep breath; and then roll up our sleeves to determine how best to maximize the impact of our own organizations and our network in advancing a sustainable future. We will do so in the beautiful Kingbridge Conference Centre, located just north of Toronto.

Based on member feedback, this year’s conference will move away from the classic panel sessions to embrace a focus on funder collaboration, networking opportunities and professional development. It will also challenge us to wrestle with some thorny questions, such as: “We are working fast and hard, but are we getting the results we seek? What approaches can we discover to rethink our ways of doing work? How we are doing things and which partners are we engaging? If current funding strategies aren’t working, should we be looking at others?”

Working with Monica Pohlmann, a Principal with ReosPartners (Adam Kahane, our 2018 plenary conference speaker is the founder of the firm), we are fashioning a program that will include facilitated funder discussions around key issues with which members are engaged, including climate; protected areas; oceans; sustainable communities; toxics; and sustainable agriculture. We will also be building in several professional development opportunities, relevant to our role as both funders and investors. Inspiring plenary speakers and a visit to the McMichael Gallery, home to a the country’s premiere collection of Canadian art, will round out the conference program.

Details on the conference program will be posted as they are confirmed, with the conference running from 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7th through 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 9th.

The early bird deadline for conference registration is April 1st! Leadership members receive one (1) free conference ticket and Champion members receive two (2) free conference tickets.

The CEGN conference is for philanthropic funders. Members of Philanthropic Foundations of Canada, Community Foundations of Canada, The Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada, Environmental Grantmakers Association, Great Lakes Funders Collaborative, Arctic Funders’ Collaborative and Biodiversity Funders Group are invited to register at the CEGN Member rate.
