Event description

Description

The Faculty of Law’s Certificate in Aboriginal Legal Studies is for students who have a vocational or intellectual interest in the intersection between law and the history, politics, thought, or practices of Aboriginal Law. The program complements students’ legal training by providing an interdisciplinary framework within which concepts and methods from the study of law can be applied to a relevant topic in Indigenous Studies. Students complete the Certificate in accordance with Law Faculty requirements and in conjunction with the Centre for Indigenous Studies through the Arts and Science division at the University of Toronto. One of the requirements of the Certificate program is that students write and present to the public a Senior Upper Year Research Paper (SUYRP) on a topic related to Aboriginal law, Indigenous law, topics or perspectives.

The following students will present their research (please note the titles provided are subject to change):

Tali Chernin BAS, CHRP, JD Candidate 2019: Indigenous Reserves as Sacrifice Zones: Aboriginal rights, the Charter and factoring cumulative environmental effects

Veronica Ann Guido BA, JD Candidate 2019: The Duty to Accommodate in Canada: How the Yukon Umbrella Final Agreement can influence Federal Guidelines

Jessica Kras BA, MPP, JD Candidate 2018: Past and Presentism: Interpreting Historical Legislation in Williams Lake Indian Band v Canada (Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development)

The event will start at 12:45 p.m. with an opening ceremony. We will eat lunch at 1:00 p.m. and presentations will commence at 1:30 p.m. This is a free event and all are welcome! Please register so that we have enough food for everyone!
