Event description

Description

Court rulings in Ontario and British Columbia have concluded that solitary confinement is unconstitutional. The government has been given a year to reflect the new rulings.

The effects of solitary confinement are destructive and often permanent causing psychological harm including post-traumatic stress disorder and suicides. Solitary confinement is more than unconstitutional, it is cruel and unusual punishment.

On September 12, 2018, we will be hosting a panel discussion examining the consequences of short and long-term solitary confinement and what changes we expect to see in legislation and practice.
