Music in the Barns
Specializing in comprehensively curated, site-specific "installation concerts," Music in the Barns transforms spaces into uniquely immersive, classical music experiences. The company has produced critically acclaimed performances in some of Toronto’s most iconic locations, including the Hearn Generating Station, Artscape Wychwood Barns (7,500 sq ft Mainspace), the Drake Hotel’s “Underground," and The Academy of Lions. Most recently, their #1000Strings project garnered international attention, bringing together over 1000 performers and onlookers of all ages in Yonge-Dundas Square and their latest production, Song of Extinction, in partnership with the Luminato Festival 10th Anniversary marked their fifth and most ambitious world premiere.
Inspiring a strong following of new generation audiences, seasoned listeners, and the local community, Music in the Barns has presented sold-out performances of new works by Canada's most important rising composers including Nicole Lizée (Mtl), Rose Bolton (TO), Scott Godin (BC), Richard Reed Parry (Mtl) and Michael Oesterle (QC), showcasing new compositions alongside masterworks such as Philip Glass’ String Quartet No. 5, Anton Bruckner’s String Quintet, W.A. Mozart’s 1894 Sinfonia Concertante arranged for string sextet, George Crumb’s Black Angels for Electric String Quartet, and Arvo Pärt’s Psalom, Summa and Fratres.
The Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble is a revolving collective of Toronto's leading classical and contemporary performers, featuring musicians from the Toronto Symphony, the Canadian Opera Company, Arraymusic, the Esprit Orchestra and more. As an educator, Music in the Barns furthers Canadian composition and classical chamber music through its innovative concert series, community engagement workshops, and music school.
Music in the Barns’ first album, featuring recent string quartets by leading Canadian composers, is currently in production for release in 2017. Music in the Barns is made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, along with our incredible community of friends, partners, donors, and sponsors.
