"Characters... Stop living in wacky voices town USA" - Kara Moore (Portland)

Character players are a rare breed. To be a true character player you have to convey a solid point of view to your audience, you have to respect the character when you channel it and play it with sincerity. Once all of that is done, then you will find your voice.

Too many times we see people play small children as dumb/mean over the top caricatures. They shuffle into the scene on their knees with a loud lispy voice and start a tantrum, but guess what? Children are amazing! They are rich in personality, they are smarter than most grown ups and they are honest to a fault. They see and say what we won't.

Over the years I have developed countless characters. I know them so well that I can pull them out and adjust them in a variety of scenarios. They can be sweet, or mean. Some of them think they know everything lol. To me they feel like real people lol.

I love to see people play believable characters that connect to an audience. To build a great character takes sincerity and respect to the type of character you are playing.

In this workshop I will focus on character development by using different exercises and practices to build a character wheel. Some of this will be drawing on their own personal experiences/family members to create a character template.

Instructor Bio:

Kara has been performing, studying, teaching and coaching improv comedy since 2001. In 2005 she moved to Chicago where she attended training centers at IO Chicago and The Annoyance Theater. Her instructors included Joe Bill, Noah Gregoropoulos, Dina Facklace and Rich Sohn.

She is on the leadership team at Kickstand Comedy Space and helps run the training center there. One of the key goals of the program is to focus on grounded play to find "why something is funny" and continue to build scene from there.

She has performed at: IO Chicago, The Second City Chicago Donnie's Sky Box, The Playground Theater Chicago, Curious Comedy Theater (Portland), The Brody Theater (Portland) and Kickstand Comedy Space (Portland)

Festivals she has performed in include: Vancouver International Improv Festival (Vancouver, B.C.), Del Close Marathon (NYC), Stumptown Improv Festival (Portland, OR) and Out of Bounds (Austin, TX)

Kara continues to find new ways to improve her comedy skills all of the time. She enjoys how there are still no shortage of discoveries left to make. Learning how different people learn and understand is fascinating to Kara and plays a huge roll in her teaching and coaching style.
