Velvety richness & subtle value ranges.

  • Thursday April 5, 6-9pm
  • Friday April 6, 10am-3pm

$110 Paper and Birch Panel Included

This workshop focuses on specific techniques in charcoal that achieve a landscape based image with a velvety richness, subtle value ranges, and the softest of edges. The resulting image departs from the typical drawings’ use of line as a means of conveying form, and produces something more akin to charcoal painting.

Students will learn to evenly tone a surface in charcoal until the paper is saturated. The image will then be worked using erasers and blending stumps in a subtractive method.

Guided by multiple demonstrations, students will work with general forms and shapes as the foundation of their composition. As the image progresses students will begin building more specific details within the image through the use of highlights, refined edges, and deep shadows. In producing a monochromatic drawing, students will focus on the importance of tonal contrast and use of hard and soft edges to build form and depth in an image.

Charcoal can be messy, and our main tools will be our hands, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

A prepared surface of BFK Rives drawing paper mounted on a 16”x20” birch panel will be provided by the instructor and included in the price of the workshop.

Instructor Bio:

Amy Gaulin grew up in small towns throughout Alberta. While living with her parents, she also lived amongst their collections of antiques, trinkets, and dated items. Being surrounded by rusted metal parts, aged wood, and their warm colours has given Amy an affinity to capturing the stories of items often left unheard. These sensibilities are captured in the essence of her paintings, drawings, and sculptural works.

Amy is a multidisciplinary artist, specializing in realistic portraits. Trained as a printmaker, and previously employed as a sculptor, Amy has also facilitated many public workshops in bookmaking, printmaking, and art therapy. Though she has ambition in many fields, her focus lies within using soft marks, subtle details, and muted colours through painting to vivify fading photographs and give permanence to disappearing memories. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with distinction from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2012, and most recently is the recipient of the 2015 ACAD Alumni Legacy Award.
