Event description

Description

Clothing is a fundamental expression of personal identity--one which often extends beyond aesthetics. The historical, cultural, and spiritual significance of our sartorial choices have largely informed how we use clothing to tell stories of our heritage and how we choose to “wear our identity”.

This year, the theme of Cultural Resurgence was selected to bring light to the role fashion plays as a mobilizer of cultural identity and expression, particularly for minority communities across Canada. In creating this platform, we hope to foster dialogues on representation in the fashion industry, explore clothing as a mode of resistance, and embody the multiculturalism of our globalized world. Our runway will present designs from a variety of cultural backgrounds including African, Canadian Indigenous, Indian, Middle Eastern, among others.

Our event will be held in support of the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA), a culturally diverse settlement agency that recognizes, responds to, and focuses on the unique concerns and needs of immigrant and refugee women, girls, and their families, as well as the Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth (USAY), a Calgary-based program which empowers urban Indigenous youth through leadership and networking opportunities.
