Description

The Atlantic Charities Initiative (ACI) supports and strengthens the charitable sector in Atlantic Canada. ACI’s primary objective is to build greater awareness among registered charities of Canada Revenue Agency policy through free information sessions titled Charity Fundamentals and is comprised of four presentations:

Obligations of Registered Charities

9:30am - 10:45am

The focus of this presentation is to highlight the responsibilities that accompany registered status such as devotion of resources to charitable purposes and activities, the filing of the T3010 Annual Information Return, maintaining adequate books, fundraising activities, and issuance of official receipts for donations. It also highlights the differences between NPOs and registered charities which are often referred to as NPOs.

Fee-based Programming for Registered Charities

11am - Noon

This presentation covers CRA policy relevant to fee-based and employment-themed charitable programs and how Community Economic Development activities such as social enterprise can operate within the structure of a registered charity.

Registered Charities and Fundraising

1pm - 2:15pm

Topics covered in this presentation include Canada Revenue Agency’s Guidance on Fundraising, receipting of gifts, reporting of fundraising revenue and expenses, and best fundraising practices, including accountability and transparency.

Registered Charities and Business Activities (developed with Richard Bridge, Barrister and Solicitor)

2:30pm - 3:45pm

This presentation provides clarity to how the Canada Revenue Agency identifies and classifies business activities, what types of business activities registered charities are allowed to carry on, the difference between business activities and other allowable activities that have business-like characteristics.
