The Old Curiosity Shop was bigger than Harry Potter when it became a breakout hit in 1841 - fans rioted at the New York docks when the final monthly installment from England arrived.

Little Nell must rescue her grandmother from her crippling debt by running away together. With nothing but her wits and innate goodness, she encounters a host of Dickens’ richest characters. Hot on her heels is the sadistic moneylender Quilp, bent on her grandfather’s utter destruction. Her tragic death, barely more than a child, reminds us that in the end, we are all relieved of our burden. Meanwhile, chronic idler Dick Swiveller, and Nell’s young admirer Kit Nubbles, wander into the tangled story, and remind us that sometimes, good things happen to good people.

Overlooking all this is the fairy godmother figure of Mrs Jarley, with her homely wisdom, and her own crazy cast of living waxwork figures. – Playwright – Simon Webb

Sarah Rodgers is thrilled to be directing a classic Dickens story - one of the greatest novelist's of the Victorian era - The Old Curiosity shop is filled with delicious characters and seeped in the great tradition of English Theatre. This is a unique, witty, fresh adaptation written by local Vancouver playwright Simon Webb. – Director - Sarah Rodgers
