In the first part of this presentation, I will provide an overview of China’s rapidly growing digital economy, including their strategies for bolstering six key digital technologies: 5G and 6G, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, virtual reality/augmented reality. I will further analyze how digital technologies are reshaping traditional industries like manufacturing and finance, as well as expanding digital industries such as mobile payments and online games.

In the second part of the presentation, I will evaluate the impact of US regulatory actions on China’s high-tech industries related to digital technologies and provide my analysis of the prospects for China’s digital economy in the midst of an escalating US-China high-tech war.

About the speaker

Prof. Bo Chen, Ph.D

Professor Bo CHEN received his Ph.D. degree in Economics from Simon Fraser University in 2008. Currently Dr. Chen is the Chutian Distinguished Professor of Economics and the executive director of Institute of Free Trade Zone (FTZ) of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. He is also a research associate of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and a distinguished fellow of the Jack Austin Center.

Dr. Chen’s research interests are on International Economics, Development Economics, and China’s Economy. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers on renowned journals such as Journal of International Economics, Journal of Comparative Economics, Economics Letters, the World Economy, etc.

Dr. Chen has been invited to give talks at the Ministry of Treasury and the Ministry of Commerce of China on issues such as the Belt & Road Initiative, Pilot Free Trade Zone, SOE Reforms. He has also given keynote speeches on China Macroeconomic Policies and Reforms to many leading business groups and think tanks such as the Goldman Sachs Group, HSBC, the Deutsche Bank, BAML, Citi Bank, BMW, the Asian Society, the Rhodium Group, and CEPII.

This session will be moderated by Jing Li, Director of the Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies at SFU Beedie School of Business.
