Event description

Description

A trained birder can hear 8-10 times more birds than they can see.

The Chirps, tweets and trills: Learn your local bird songs Course provides 12 hours of training to help Ottawa residents identify the birds that they will hear and see in the Ottawa area.

We offer this bird-song ID class for free, even if you've done it before. In return, we hope you'll volunteer some time to the Ottawa Bird Count (there are many opportunities; field surveys, data entry, fundraising, etc.)

The training will focus on learning to identify the songs of the most common bird species in the Ottawa area. The course will also cover tips, tricks and technology for learning bird songs, and survey methods for the Ottawa Bird Count's point count and census plot surveys. As it gets warmer, there will be some opportunities for outdoor field practice. To be successful it is recommended that participants of this course do homework between sessions.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to quickly recognize the songs of at least the 70 most common species that are encountered within the Ottawa area. This level of skill will qualify volunteers to adopt an Ottawa Bird Count, point count survey-route, and therefore make you a more successful and attractive person... ;-).

Participants are signing up to attend all six days of the course:This is a 12 hour commitment.
