Event description

Description

Just by paying for addmission to the nature centre, The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) for Kids and Beginners is a fun birdwatching event that engages families and the greater community in real Citizen Science! After some quick introductions and a birding workshop, the feeder watchers will start rotating through their stations. Over the two hour birding period, you may go on a birding hike, as well. Warm up with some hot chocolate along the way! After the count tally, it is time for nature-ful prizes!

Who can come?

Advanced birders are welcome, as are those who are totaly new! Though children younger than 8 may not be suited for all of the birding activities, kids of all ages are welcome to tag along and help spot our avian friends! Participants younger than 13 should be paired with an adult during birding.

What to bring:

  • Binoculars (if you have a pair)
  • Warm cloths
  • A mug (for hot chocolate and other refreshments!)
  • Your keen eyes!

Sign yourself up for:

  • Feeder watcher: You and your partner will record all the birds that visit a feeder. Feeder watchers will rotate between 4 stations: two outdoor, one indoor, and a rest station. Feeder watchers will spend ~10-15 minutes at each feeder before switching to the next. You can also choose to go on Birch Trail for a portion of the birding period.
  • Birch Trail (40 minutes): Count the birds on this trail that circles above the Nature Centre. You will go on this trail once, then spend the reminder of the birding period as a feeder watcher.
  • River Loop Trail (1.5 hours): This lovely trail circles around the whole of Fort Edmonton, going along the River for a large section of it. This hike will take up the majority of the birding period.
  • Fort Edmonton Bridge Trail (1.5 hours): Follow the bike path to the Fort Edmonton Bridge, and count the birds again on your way back. This trail will likely take up most of the birding period.
  • Fort Edmonton Interior (1.5 hours): If attendance is high enough, we may also try to count the birds inside Fort Edmonton park.

* Depending on turn-out for the event, we may move you to a different trail or on to a feeder-watcher shift.
