When & Where
Prince Edward County Built Heritage Fund
The demolition in August 2010 of the 135 year old Methodist Episcopal Church, an iconic landmark on Main Street Picton shocked County residents. A few concerned citizens gathered to discuss how to prevent the loss of important heritage buildings. This small group realized that without intervention many historic buildings in the County could be lost to us – and to future generations. The first Christmas House Tour Committee was born and the first Christmas House Tourwas held in December 2010.
The popularity and reputation of the annual tour continues to grow. The proceeds from the sale of tickets have been entrusted to the County Community Foundation in a special fund designated as the Prince Edward County Built Heritage Fund. The purpose of which is to support the preservation and protection of built structures deemed to be important to the community and to the history of Prince Edward County.
In early 2015, the Committee was very pleased to announce that applications for the first "Save The Day" grant would be considered. The response was both heartening and at the same time reassuring, clearly indicating that these grants were a needed resource to the community.
On July 13, 2015, the primary "Save The Day" grant of $5,000.00 was presented to the Old White Chapel for its roofing project. Two additional grants of $1,500.00 were awarded to St. Mary Magdalene Church to help complete the restoration of its tower, and to the Andrew Carnegie Library in Picton for window restoration.
In July 2016 the committee chose to support the restoration of the House of Falconer in Picton with a grant of $5,000.00. In addition, $2,500.00 was awarded to the Victoria Schoolhouse in Ameliasburgh to help fund a new steel roof, and a second award of $2,500.00 was given to the Regent Theatre to assist with masonry wall repairs.
