This full-day workshop will take participants step by step through the stunning photo-chemical technique mastered by Australian experimental filmmakers Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie, which allows selectively controlled negative and positive colour and black and white images on the same strip of film.

The technique allows us to make selection decisions in full light with the images visible to the naked eye. Areas of black, clear, colour negative, colour positive and glorious black and white can be created all within a single frame of a camera-captured image.

The workshop begins with an introduction to the principles of the process, and participants will then collaborate on shooting on colour reversal and colour negative film stock outside, from which a freshly made colour print will be made. Instead of processing this with conventional industrial methods, a novel processing sequence is undertaken that will produce an odd looking black and white image on the film. Participants then select various areas on that print to end up as positive colour, negative colour, leave black and white or process as black or clear film. Those areas will be selectively covered with special chemical blocking tape. Then the film will be selectively bathed in an assortment of colour chemistry before removing the tape and bathing in more chemistry.

As well as engaging with a great experimental film technique, this workshop is a great opportunity to learn in detail how colour film works. All chemistry and materials are supplied, as well as full access to the darkroom throughout the workshop. Workshop results will be screened on site at the end of the session!
