Dr. Kevin Kemball on "Reclamation for Mines"

About this Event

The CIM Edmonton branch is pleased to have Dr. Kevin Kemball from the NAIT Centre for Boreal Research presenting "Reclamation for Mines: How do we set ecological targets and what is the direction of best practices?"

Dr. Kemball is the Director of Business Development for the NAIT Centre for Boreal Research. In this role Kevin works in a collaborative environment to support applied research in Alberta. Kevin is responsible for implementing the strategic direction and integration of NAIT’s boreal applied research to meet the needs of industry and of Albertans.

Kevin is a Professional Biologist in Alberta with a background in biology (B.Sc.), forestry (M.Sc.), and a Ph.D. in ecology. Before moving to Alberta in 2006, Kevin’s researched focused on disturbance and recovery of boreal forest ecosystems in Manitoba where he also lectured at the University of Winnipeg for Forest Ecology, Forest Policy and Management, and Forest Ecosystems courses. In Alberta Kevin spent 13 years as a consultant where his work focused primarily on environmental impact assessments, reclamation, wetland restoration and construction, peatland restoration, and GHG protocol and project development.

Kevin has worked on several mine impact and other environmental assessment projects in Alberta as both a contributor and technical lead for rare and traditional use plants, wetlands, biodiversity, forest resources, and reclamation planning. In additional, Kevin has coauthored the Alberta Silviculture Guide: Boreal Mixedwood and Lower Foothills Natural Subregions for the Alberta Mixedwood Management Association, and the Riparian Classification and Reclamation Guide for CEMA.

Kevin will discuss how ecological targets are set for mine reclamation in Alberta and some of the major obstacle’s for reclamation in the foothills and boreal forest. The discussion will include the direction of best management practices for reclamation
