"Her work with turntables and DJs is singular, employing them to produce a precise sound at an exact moment, as would be done with any other instrument in ensemble playing. It is not random." -Musicworks Magazine
Our most ambitious and creative event to date, join us for an electrifying portrait programme featuring three compositions by the 2013 Jules Léger Prize winning composer Nicole Lizée. Performed by the Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble and downtown Array Ensemble in the landmark Mainspace building of the Artscape Wychwood Barns, this not to be missed performance includes Lizée's signature "notated" turntables, as well as alt-instruments- stylophone and onmiphone, in a one hour, intermissionless show.
Surround projections will showcase the evening's crown jewel, Lizée’s Hitchcock Etudes, a reworking of the master of suspense's iconic movie moments, set to what will be the world premiere of Lizée's new arrangement of the work for string quartet, percussion and electronics. The performance will also feature Nicole Lizée’s Kronos Quartet commissioned string quartet, Death to Komische, and the Array Ensemble's second performance of their 2011 Canada Council supported commission, Lizée's multi-instrumental ensemble work, Traumnovelle.
In conjunction with the University of Toronto’s Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, Lizée will be appearing at 2PM as a featured speaker for their Friday Chat Series, leading up to the evening’s performance. There will also be a brief Q&A with host Howard Wiseman, York University film professor, at 7:15PM for Music in the Barns' pre-concert chat series.
