Purpose:

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), by age 40 nearly 50% of all Canadians will have - or have had - mental illness. Also, the CMHA believes that mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some point through a family member, friend, or colleague.

The CIQS-Ontario is passionate about doing our part to assist in this epidemic; through awareness, education, and encouraging our members to help eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness.

Speaker:

Nick Patrella, Professor, Mohawk College

Nick Patrella, professor, Mohawk College

Nick earned a Master of Science degree from Brock University in 2006 with a focus on human performance and exercise physiology. Hired as a Professor at Mohawk College in 2009, Nick was brought on board to assist with the development of their Health, Wellness and Fitness program and is currently acting as the 1st year coordinator. A two-time recipient of the Instructor Appreciation Award at Mohawk College, Nick is a passionate educator who is always trying to impart his knowledge on others. As a Keynote Speaker in Mental Health, Nick earned instructor status in Mental Health First Aid with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and is a frequent speaker on behalf of the Talking About Mental Illness program through the Canadian Mental Health Association. Last year, Nick was awarded the St Joseph’s Hospital Spirit of Hope, an honour awarded to an individual who is making strides on reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.
