When : The October 19th, 2018 Professional Development Day

Time: 9:00 am to 1:30 pm

Where: At Johnston Heights Secondary School - 15350-99 Avenue Surrey, BC V3R 0R9

The Learning Disabilities Association Fraser South (LDAFS) and Dyslexia BC are hosting

Dr Kelli SandmanHurley (Ed.D) and Tracy Block-Zaretsky from the Dyslexia Training Institute in California.

Attendees will participant in a short simulation of dyslexia and spelling. Following the situation there will be a presentation that provides an overview of dyslexia which will address some facts and myths about dyslexia. The rest of the workshop will describe strategies that can be used with students to help them understand the underlying structure of the English language. The strategies shared can be used right away in classrooms and tutoring sessions. For example, participants will understand how to teach sight words through a word investigation process that reveals why words are spelled the way they are (for example why is there a "g" in the word sign ) to help students understand, instead of memorize, English.
