About this Event
The workshop will be presented by Melanie Nelson, a local school psychologist and doctoral candidate who has worked in assessment as an educator for 13 years; 4 as a school psychologist and private practice clinician. She has also worked with Indigenous youth and communities for 15 years. Parts of the information presented have been presented in her previous work with educators and clinicians, however, the presentation in the current structure has not been shared previously. This presentation was tailored to meet the requests of psychologists polled for what they expect from training regarding cultural responsiveness.
The workshop will be focused on gaining a better understanding about how interactions with historical and current policies and practices across social systems may influence the experience of Indigenous people accessing psychological services. Beginning ideas for a more culturally responsive approach to assessment with Indigenous populations with be explored, including documents designed to guide clinicians on a path toward Reconciliation in clinical practice, specific examples of how the presenter has made changes to her practice, and other resources related to Reconciliation.
The target audience is psychologists who work with CLBC and any other interested psychologists. This workshop is sponsored by CLBC and there is no charge to attend.
