On Wednesday, August 10 at 6pm, join Massy Arts, Massy Books, and artists Catriona Strang, Toni-Leah Yake, and annie ross for an intimate closing reception for Massy Arts’ new exhibition: Love/Land Love/Defense: Indigenous Responsibility, Right & Relationship.

The event will be hosted at the Massy Arts Gallery, at 23 East Pender Street in Chinatown, Vancouver.

This event is free + open to all of our community, and registration is mandatory. The gallery is wheelchair accessible and a gender-neutral washroom is on-site.

Covid Protocols: For all in-person events, attendees must provide proof of vaccination, wear a mask (N95 masks are encouraged and recommended as they offer the best protection), and consent to having their temperature checked at the front door. We ask that if you are showing any symptoms, that you stay home. Thank you kindly.

The Show

“I am in Love with a Mountain, a River, Mother Earth, and all of her Beings.”

The pieces presented on this exhibition are from recent paintings, an installation piece, and weaving, speaking to an Indigenous logic, Making as a link to the power of Creation, and life as Ceremony. Our Relationships to Mother Earth, and Her Beings are honored here.


Catriona Strang is the author of Low Fancy (ECW Press, 1993), Corked (Talonbooks, 2014), Reveries of a Solitary Biker (Talonbooks, 2017), and Unfuckable Lardass (Talonbooks, 2022) and co-author with the late Nancy Shaw of Busted (Coach House, 2001), Cold Trip (2006), and Light Sweet Crude (Line Books, 2007). She frequently collaborates with composer Jacqueline Leggatt, and lives with her two grown kids on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ lands.

Toni-Leah C. Yake (European, Kanien’kehá:ka and Haudenessaunee – Turtle Clan) is a composer and artist currently residing on the unceded, traditional, and occupied territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Sel̓íl̓witulh Nations. Her work aims to explore Indigenity, history, blood memory, trauma, and healing. They are a student in the department of Indigenous Studies at Simon Fraser University, and a student of composition in the Music & Sound Area of Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts.

annie grace ross is a poet, weaver, sculptor, printmaker, researcher, and educator working with Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver. Her poems have appeared in the Capilano Review (Fall 2017, Spring 2022), Canadian Literature: A Quarterly of Criticism and Review (September 2017), The Maynard (Spring 2017, Fall 2015), Yellow Medicine Review (Fall 2014), Project Intersect Clarion Call (September 2014) and Quills Poetry Magazine (September 2014). Her research/creation installation pieces, weaving, photography, printmaking with art/poetry books have been adopted as texts in university teachings Happy Birthday Super Cheaper (2005), Pots and Other Living Beings (Talon Press, 2019). Some People Fall in the Lodge and then Eat Berries all Winter will be out Fall 2022.

Massy Arts Society is 100% funded by Massy Books, an Indigenous woman-owned and operated bookstore on the unceded territories of XwMuthkwium (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. To date we haven't received any operating funds from any grants and are now providing the option for folks to contribute to keeping our events accessible and doors open. All proceeds from your donation will go towards operation costs of our community hub while we focus on supporting the practices of Indigenous and over-excluded artists.
