Event description

Description

Our day long festival style tour takes place at the Conservation Area at Maplewood Flats, a 126 hectare bird sanctuary on the unceded Coast Salish lands and waters of the Tsleil-Waututh, a 25-minute drive from the I.O. Congress site in downtown Vancouver. The Conservation Area features the only remaining mudflats in Vancouver’s harbour, salt marsh, wonderful viewing points, public art in the landscape, and a brand new nature house. The sanctuary itself is managed with Traditional Ecological Knowledge and its location is recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) as identified by BirdLife International. Public education and restoration programs serve as a platform for “reconciliation-in-action“ between settlers and the Indigenous community who have stewarded the area for more than 13000 years. This exclusive tour will immerse you in history, culture, and nature in one of the region’s foremost wild bird sanctuaries. We have many activities happening all day including:

  • (Optional) Takaya Tours ocean-going canoe journey with guide revealing traditional ecological knowledge of the local area long Burrard Inlet, identifying habitat stressors as well as marine and shoreline restoration efforts for birds. 1.5 hrs (If choosing the canoe journey, please select the correct ticket when you check out!)

  • Naturalist walk on the contemporary history of the area with results and analysis of bird surveys and overview of the Osprey and Purple Martin programs.

  • Coast Salish plant and bird identification walk with a Coast Salish ethnobotanist guide.

  • Coast Salish storytelling with local Elder

  • Bird photography exhibition with award-winning photographers. Meet the photographers!

  • Coast Salish barbecued salmon feast lunch

COSTS: Costs include all transportation, guides, cultural program, and salmon feast. Participants have the option to choose pay additional cost for the unique canoe tour. Proceeds from this Indigenous cultural tourism program support Tsleil-Waututh Indigenous cultural and economic development.

BIRDING ABILITY AND PHYSICAL FITNESS: This experience is for any level of birder and focuses on different ways of looking at birds. Our trails are quite flat and walking will be easy. If joining the canoe tour some comfort with the ocean is beneficial, however no experience with ocean-going canoes is required. The traditional canoes are large and very stable holding 10-20 people. Instructions will be provided prior to embarking in the canoes.

WHAT TO BRING AND EXPECT: Expect to dress for warm summer conditions with a couple of extra layers in case it is cooler on the water or in the forest. Rain is always possible in Vancouver so a light rain jacket is recommended. Bring an open mind and open heart and you will be rewarded with a once in a lifetime experience. If canoeing, a personal flotation device will be provided.
