Event description

Description

Commercial Drive, or simply “The Drive,” is one of Vancouver’s most colourful neighbourhoods. Home to lively music, eclectic art, and mouthwatering food, it is where myriad cultures contribute to a distinct experience of entertainment, community organizing, and daily living. Come join us for a walk that will pique your musical curiosity, uncover indie shops, and enrich your cultural sense of Vancouver.

COMMERCIAL DRIVE CULTURE TOUR
Saturday, May 26, 1-4pm
Meeting Location: 1661 Napier Street
Light refreshments provided

Leading the way are Alyson Budd and Crystal Lee. Alyson is a long-time resident of The Drive with musical roots and a passion for empowering diverse communities. Crystal, founder of Relocal, is passionate about spotlighting small businesses and connecting Vancouverites.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We will begin our walk at Napier Greenway, a garden oasis at the entrance of Britannia Community Services Centre. From this heart of the community, we will journey down The Drive to discover music, art, and food influenced by indigenous and settler cultures. Moving at a mindful pace, we will stop at record shops, bookstores, Italian cafes, vintage boutiques, and green spaces. Hear stories from a local to learn how this neighbourhood and its people shape the city’s ever-changing cultural fabric.

The tour will end at a local eatery for light refreshments and deeper conversations. Stay as long as you wish! Past Relocal attendees share that these chats are their favourite way to connect with like-minded people and learn about what's happening in the city.

WHAT TO KNOW

We will be walking indoors and outdoors to explore approximately 10 blocks of The Drive neighbourhood. While the walking pace will be gentle, weather conditions may vary throughout the afternoon, so please dress appropriately for the tour.

Light refreshments will be served at our final stop. If you would like to purchase additional food or merchandise in the neighbourhood, we recommend bringing cash as some small business accept cash only.

ABOUT THE CO-FACILITATORS

Alyson Budd is a long-time resident of The Drive and she’s eager to share relaxing moments amidst the area’s hustle and bustle. As a veteran of Vancouver’s indie music scene, she also has amazing intel on music venues, record stores, and cultural events. An avid cyclist, disability and mental health advocate, and balcony farmer, she’s also a linguistic specialist in articulatory and acoustic phonetics. What does that mean? She’s a member of VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association) who trains people to work on their speech and pronunciation the way a fitness coach would train an athlete!

Crystal Lee is a social entrepreneur passionate about healthy communities. As a professionally trained coach and laughter yoga leader, she helps individuals thrive during life and career transitions. She finds great joy in connecting people over fun activities and meaningful conversations. In her spare time, you will find her exploring new neighbourhoods, discovering street art, petting animals, and excitedly pointing out flowers.
