Description

If you’re a practicing Product Manager in the early stage of your career, you’re probably looking for practical tools you can immediately implement on the job. Become a Product Manager who is product wise. Take your product management career to the next level by learning systematic and practical theory and on-the-job experience. This program will span seven full months, incorporating in-class training, coaching and practical implementation. Session topics include:

  1. Product development processes including lean/agile and facilitating meetings for product managers

  2. Business cases and building your business plan

  3. Storytelling for product managers - to customers, market, management and teams

  4. Decision making and prioritization

  5. Building a user centric product backlog

  6. Customer relationships: gain insights and get the feedback you need at all stages of the product

Each in-class session will be organized as an introduction to the theory/concept followed by an activity to apply what you’ve learned. In between sessions you will be expected to implement the concepts you’re learning into your own workplace. Over the course of the program, you also have access to a coach/mentor for up to 5 hours to work through any hurdles you encounter.

Learning outcomes: By the end of this program, you’ll be set to:

  • Orient the work of a Product Manager into a product development framework.

  • Incorporate the most pertinent principles of lean and agile into the product development process.

  • Facilitate development team meetings like standups, retrospectives, sprint planning and reviews.

  • Build the business case.

  • Articulate the resources and key activities required to deliver on the business model.

  • Build an execution plan to achieve product success.

  • Create meaningful and memorable presentations about your product to key stakeholders.

  • Use a variety of techniques and data to weigh the importance of features.

  • Create a prioritized backlog of user stories.

  • Apply the right customer interaction/feedback for the product phase.

Who it's for: This program is for you if you are:

  • New to product management

  • Early in your career as a product manager (less than 2 years experience)

How big is the class? Maximum of 20 participants

Session Details:
The six (6) sessions that make up this program are offered in an open session format. Two (2) of these sessions will be full day sessions, while four (4) of these sessions will be half-day sessions, and fall on the following days:

  • Fri, April 17, 2020 (full day)

  • Fri, May 15, 2020 (half-day morning)

  • Fri, Jun 19, 2020 (half-day morning)

  • Fri, Sep 18, 2020 (half-day morning)

  • Fri, Oct 16, 2020 (half-day morning)

  • Fri, Nov 20, 2020 (full day)

In addition to these scheduled classes, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with your chosen coach (selection takes place after first session) 5 times throughout the course, subject to scheduling between that coach and yourself.

Registration* fees:

  • Employees of startup and mid-size Communitech Member companies: $2,400

  • Employees of enterprise Communitech Member companies and Communitech Associate Member companies: $2,950

  • Non-members: $3,450

Includes coffee to kick-start your day, as well as lunch during the two full day sessions to kick-off and end the program.

*Note: To encourage diversity of thought in the classroom, we cap participant enrolment at a maximum of three employees per company. If you would like more people from your organization to benefit from this program, let us know and we can talk about a potential team session.

The parking lot at 151 Charles Street West, Kitchener, is limited and is a shared visitor lot for all tenants in the Tannery building. It is for short term use only, up to two hours. Use the GRT EasyGo trip planner to find your best route on the ION light rail or bus services, which conveniently make regular, nearby stops.
