Event description

Description

We are a group of Trans and gender nonbinary community members and allies who formed a collective in order to facilitate a forum for engaging with and centering the voices of community members. We will be facilitating a community gathering that elevates and prioritizes stories of individuals who have been historically absent in health discourse. The primary purpose is to draw attention to current gaps in care that are absent from cis professional contexts and name the further marginalization of Trans and nonbinary individuals who are part of the Black, Indigenous, Two-Spirit, Mixed-race, and People of Colour (BIMPOC-2S) community. In planning this event, we recognized and prioritized the voices of BIMPOC-2S individuals as well as sex workers, elders, and those living with disabilities. As part of the data collection we will be collecting and documenting these stories using various mediums. At CPATH we will present these stories in an effort to call in and create an opportunity for accountability of health professionals who work within systems that perpetuate harms including: the pathologizing of gender, policing of bodies, and the creation of barriers to holistic trans-centered care. In presenting these stories we also draw attention to the disparate barriers that exist in accessing health services compared to cis populations and hope that through these stories we can inject the health community with motivation to engage in conversations around shifting models of health care to ones that uphold the lived experience of community members and prioritize the decolonization of medical practice.

There will be counselors available for debriefing and we are currently arranging to have ASL interpretation.

Divided into Two sessions:

First Session for QTBIMPOC2S identified individuals 615pm to 715pm

The main goal for this session is to discuss, unravel and identify pathways for solutions when it comes to accessibility to health care services for Black, Indigenous, Mixed-race, people of colour who are Trans, Two-Spirit and gender diverse. Through story telling we will be able to bring out major themes of the experiences of community members when attempting to access supportive services.

Second Session will be an open forum from 715pm to 800pm

Similar to the first session, during this session we will discuss the experiences of folks who have difficulty accessing supportive health care services - we will identify themes and pathways for solutions with respect to barriers for accessing care. This session is open to anyone who identifies as Trans, Two-Spirit and/or is gender diverse.

Reception - Throughout sessions from 700pm onwards

There will be an opportunity to engage with and network with other community members following these sessions. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available.
