About this Event

MEDIATOR TRAINING

About Community Mediation

Community Mediation is a peer-to-peer approach for resolving tense situations. Mediation is practiced in teams of two co-mediators. It is part of an effort promoting healthy communities through peaceful conflict resolution. This training has been approved as meeting standards set by the Ontario Community Mediators' Coalition (OCMC).

Community Mediation is rooted in the Transformative Mediation approach, helping people empower themselves to clearly express their point of view, recognize the perspective of others, and collaborate towards mutually respectful solutions. These concepts of empowerment and recognition distinguish Transformative Mediation from settlement-based or other types of interest-based mediation and negotiation. In Peterborough, our practice is also informed by Restorative Justice principles and by Marshall Rosenberg's compassionate conflict resolution process, "Nonviolent Communication" (Rosenberg, 2015). That means we support mediation participants to identify their underlying needs and develop sustainable, mutually satisfying, needs-based strategies.

The primary goal is to shift relationships from antagonism to goodwill, and assist people in finding their own resolutions from there.

This is a form of peer mediation. We train both youth and adult peer mediators to resolve conflict in schools, neighbourhoods, and the wider community.
