About this event

The Companies Growing Companies series will feature interactive conversations and learnings with experts in fields needed in various stages of company growth: product design, system integration, marketing, and capacity-building. Throughout the series, companies at every stage—from startup to multinational—will learn what it takes to succeed and grow in the Alberta's health innovation sector, and why this region is the best place to build a business.

In our first in-person live session, Lynette Tremblay of Invest Alberta will host a discussion with EXCITE International, BioAlberta and Technology Alberta discussing the resources and supports available that enable growth and success for Canadian medtech companies.

About the Presenters & Companies:

Brian Lewis

EXCITE International

Brian is a Health Technology executive with over 25 years’ experience in the medical technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and not-for-profit industry association spaces.

Highlights of experiences include President & CEO of Medtech Canada, General Manager of Genzyme Canada and Executive Director of the Hospital Oncology Division of AstraZeneca Canada

Currently Brian is leading his own consulting firm, as well as representing EXCITE International.

  • EXCITE International is a global collaboration of key stakeholders — innovators/industry, regulators, payers, health systems, patients, scientists and end-users — working together in the premarket space to change the paradigm of health technology innovation and adoption.

Gail Powley

President, Technology Alberta

With over 30 years of experience, as a process control engineer and then executive, Gail has worked for companies of all sizes including: Procter & Gamble, Treiber Controls (Aspen Technology), Matrikon (Honeywell), ATCO, the Alberta Research Council (Alberta Innovates), University of Alberta, and Willowglen Systems.

Recognizing the value of supporting innovation and innovative people – she has founded and/or volunteered with organizations such as the CHOA (Canadian Heavy Oil Assn), MentorUP Alberta (Co-Founder), BESTT (Bridge for Engineering, Science, and Technology Talent (Co-founder)), AWSN (Alberta Women’s Science Network (Director)) and Women in APEGA (Chair), and most recently – Rainforest, and Alberta Regional Innovation Networks.

Gail completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta, and has enjoyed the adventures she has had in the industry and tech sectors, individually and with her husband Ron Unrau (PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto development team member of: IBM Research, Red Hat, EMC, Dell, and Apple).

Robb Stoddard

President & CEO, BioAlberta

Robb Stoddard has focused much of his career on working with organizations to fundamentally change the way they do business using technology as a strategic enabler. As co-founder of a successful consultancy, Robb has worked with health and technology companies of all sizes to build and execute business development plans and engagement strategies and advocate for policy and regulatory changes at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.

Robb joined BioAlberta as Manager, Memberships and Partnerships in 2018. During this time Robb focused on increasing member engagement, regional collaboration and generating advocacy initiatives at both the provincial and federal levels.

Prior to joining BioAlberta, Robb has been a consultant to emerging companies in the technology and health sectors and an executive with numerous technology related companies. Robb also has extensive executive management experience from more than 15 years public service, including serving Government of Alberta as: Assistant Commissioner, Labour Employment Practices; Corporate CIO and Chief Strategist; and, Director of Operations, Office of the Premier.

Robb is a born and raised Albertan and a graduate of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Business.

  • BioAlberta is a member-driven association that represents and promotes the province's vibrant and diverse life sciences industry. Through their many partnerships and collaborations, they are dedicated to promoting Alberta's life science sectors, locally, nationally and internationally.

About the Moderator:

Lynette Tremblay, Invest Alberta

  • Lynette is the Chief Operating Officer with Invest Alberta Corporation,  a newly created organization focused on attracting high impact, high value investment to Alberta.  Prior to Invest Alberta, Lynette served as VP Strategy & Innovation with Edmonton Global helping to attract foreign direct investment to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. Lynette has also held senior roles in economic development, municipal and provincial government and the private sector in B.C., Ontario and Alberta over the past 13 years. Lynette has helped build and transform organizations, led marketing, communications, policy and stakeholder relations. Lynette has a breadth of experience across public, private and non-profit sectors which helps strengthen operations, engage as an effective partner and promote Alberta to global investors. Lynette also serves on the board of the Edmonton Screen Industries Office and volunteers supporting women’s leadership initiatives.
