Event description

This workshop is a comprehensive learning and shooting experience for photographers eager to learn about and practice using studio strobes (flash units with modifiers) with live models. We will be featuring two professional industry models and will be working with portraiture, beauty, fashion, and athletic looks.

Skills transfer is a cornerstone of this event. This is not just a chance to make great photographs, but to learn the skills for yourself on how to light and to use modifiers to control the "look" of your images.

This will be our tenth workshop, with each previous event selling out. We are strictly limited to eight places to ensure lots of shooting time, hands-on, and time to ask all of your questions.

A comprehensive student guide will be provided, with a "pre-workshop" version provided in advance to allow an advanced look at technical issues, followed by a complete set of notes 2 weeks after the workshop. This document will include sample images from the event you attended, and fully diagrammed lighting setups, plus much more.

General Agenda:

- Camera setup in manual mode for compatibility with studio strobes (no manual experience required)

- Lighting modifiers: which to use, and why (from basic to advanced)

- Lens choices and how to render the more flattering face

- Working with pro grade and enthusiast level studio lighting equipment

- Post editing workflow tips to improve the shot after you've taken it

- Tips for working with models

- Core light theory (hard and soft light management), falloff, distance issues, light shaping

- Specific tips on working in a studio environment (even if it's your own home studio)

- Much more

What makes this workshop different?

Many workshops of this type tend to be about having a photographer set up lights for you, organize the models and set up your camera so that you can shoot and make nice photographs. This is a lot more than that. In this workshop, we strive for skills transfer. There is constant discussion about how and why we are setting things up the way we do. Understanding how to do this all for yourself is the skills transfer objective. The amazing images you will create are also one of the core objectives, but not the only one.

Who will benefit from this workshop?

Photographers of all skill levels are welcome to attend. You will get real hands-on experience with an array of professional lighting equipment, and work with a professional model to greatly enhance your portfolio. You will learn valuable skills for creating your own lighting using studio gear, and how to achieve certain looks for portraiture, beauty, and fashion.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Use the CONTACT link just below the organizer bio for direct contact. Your email will be responded to ASAP!

Is my seat reserved?

Your place in the workshop is absolutely reserved once you purchase your ticket. Please be certain that you can attend the workshop on the indicated date. If you have purchased a ticket and cannot attend, you are welcome to transfer your ticket to another attendee. Please contact James using the organizer contact link below if you wish to do this.

Is the price of this event worth it?

Absolutely! We are not only saving you the huge cost of renting a studio and hiring cast/crew, but we're providing high-end lighting equipment and thorough, engaging instruction. You will gain the most benefit if you come ready to learn and eager to make great photographs. We have received consistent feedback that this was both time and money well spent.

What should I bring to the workshop?

- A DSLR or mirrorless camera that has 'M' (manual mode) and has a hot shoe on top

- At least one lens of at least 50mm focal length. Longer lenses up to 150mm will also be useful

- No lighting gear of any kind (all the gear for the workshop is provided, please do not bring flash gear)

What about transportation or parking?

Studio 311 is located at the DVP and Queen St. E. Easy TTC access along the Queen St. car line, and street parking in the area is free.

Ok! I want in. What do I do next?

Simply purchase your ticket through Eventbrite (purchase button at the top of the page). You will be sent informational emails, along with a link to the pre-workshop notes about a week ahead of the event. We'll make sure you have all the relevant information about the studio location, parking, and everything else you will need to know to attend and enjoy the experience.

Do you offer any other classes?

Yes! Comprehensive multiweek photography courses are offered by us, also in the downtown area. These courses are consistently highly reviewed, in-depth and super fun. If you're looking to acquire those elusive photography skills, take a live in-classroom course with plenty of hands-on practice, homework assignments and more. More details are available at these courses are also taught by James.
