Event Details

Artist Jaco Ishulutaq and MIA’s Director of Education Alysa Procida will discuss the challenges and rewards of making art in the Arctic. Visitors will have a chance to ask Ishulutaq their own questions and talk with him about his career.

Jaco Ishulutaq (b. 1951) comes from a prominent artistic family in Panniqtuuq (Pangnirtung), Nunavut. Since the age of sixteen, he has been encouraged by his mother, famed printmaker artist Elisapee Ishulutaq (b. 1925) to pursue art making. Jaco pursued sculpture making, learning his carving technique by watching his grandfather. Jaco has become a well-known, master artist whose work is noted for its narrative quality and technical execution. His sculptures often incorporate mixed-media, such as whalebone, caribou antler and ivory, providing an interesting, visual contrast to the highly polished serpentine used for the majority of his works.

The MIA has previously worked with Jaco when MIA’s Director of Education Alysa Procida interviewed him last March. A video of her interview can be found on museum’s blog (http://museumofinuitartblog.wordpress.com/2012/03/07/conversation-series-part-three-meet-jaco-ishulutaq/).
