Why come to a computer science workshop?

Computer programming has become ubiquitous in virtually every field whether it be business, engineering, medicine, etc. In other words, programming is a highly coveted skill to have regardless of your intended career path.

This year, we are offering 3 separate sessions based on skill level. So whether you have no programming experience what so ever or have been coding since you were 5, we should have something for you!

What to expect?

The day will begin with a 3 hour programming session in the morning followed by a lunch break, presentation, and panel discussion with current computing science students and faculty members at the University of Alberta. There will be another 3 hour session after this to finish up the day.

The following is a brief description of topics that will be covered in each of our 3 sessions. Please read through carefully to ensure you register in the most appropriate session:

  • Beginner: The beginner level is designed for students with little or no experience in programming, so don't be afraid to come out and try something new! We will be covering topics including input and print statements, if-else clauses, data types, and loops. Intermediate skills such as debugging, programming style, and functions may also be explored (time permitting). The workshop will conclude with participants creating a simple web project, which they can take home.
  • Intermediate: The intermediate workshop will give participants the opportunity to work with the basics of Python programming language and web development, and complete exercises/challenges for these two areas. Python will focus on data types, input-output, boolean values, data structures (lists, dictionaries) and loops. Web development will focus on creating a simple website using HTML/CSS and playing around with the code.
  • Advanced: The advanced workshop will tackle several aspects of computing science. The students will be deepening their programming skills by exploring a new language, such as Java and working in new environments.

If you have further questions about the workshop curriculum or about the event in general, please do not hesitate to email us at events@teamupscience.com

Please note that due to the high demand of our event, we are unable to provide refunds.
