Event description

Description

Canada’s model for the sponsorship of refugees by citizen groups is recognized throughout the world as an innovative way forward. But we know the model is not perfect, and we can do better.

We may have different perspectives and experiences, but we all have a common interest in having a successful sponsorship system for refugees in Canada.

This Event is for:

  • Members of sponsorship groups with lived experience of sponsorship.
  • Members of Sponsorship Agreement Holder organizations.
  • Members of social agencies and support groups dealing with refugees.
  • Government officials from all levels involved with refugee issues.
  • Newcomers to Canada
  • Those wishing to become sponsors.

Please join us as we work together to strengthen citizen sponsorship of refugees in Canada, and establish it as the gold standard for refugee settlement, not only in Canada, but in other countries as well.

When:

Saturday May 5, 2018, 10:00am (please arrive at 9:30am for registration) – 3:30 pm (includes lunch).

Where:

Sears Atrium, George Vary Engineering Building, 245 Church Street, Ryerson University
in downtown Toronto

Some of the questions to be explored:

  • What have we learned about citizen sponsorship that we can build on and share with others?
  • How can we innovate to build more capacity into the system and make it more sustainable?
  • What can governments, businesses and civil society do to encourage more citizen sponsorships?
  • What can be done to improve notification arrangements for processing, approvals and arrivals?
  • How can existing sponsorship groups be encouraged to take another refugee family?
  • How can English-as-a-second language (ESL) programs be strengthened?
  • What are the best ways of addressing employment issues for refugees and integrating refugees into Canada?
  • How can a strong national organization representing citizen sponsors be formed and sustained?

This conference offers a chance for us to meet, discuss our various experiences and help shape recommendations on policies and procedures which will to improve citizen sponsorship in Canada. Most of the time of the conference will be devoted to interactive sessions which will fully engage participants, and Globe and Mail columnist Doug Saunders will be speaking during lunch.

Registration fee (including lunch): $25

The conference is sponsored by Canada4Refugees.org and the Diversity Institute at Ryerson University.
