Connecting Our Well-being to the Land

About this Event

Welcome Everyone!

The ATA Specialist Council GEOEC (Global, Environmental & Outdoor Education Council), proudly presents "Connecting Our Well-being to the Land".

Many teachers go years and years without even knowing what Specialist Councils are and what they offer. This workshop will not only inform you on Specialist Councils, but will provide you with tomorrow ready resources!

We are excited to host all teachers, educators and outdoor enthusiasts. These presentations won't necessarily be directed to a certain grade level, instead we will focus on all teachers. We want to focus on your own health this workshop. With a few months to go before Summer, we want to make sure we get there together.

This event focuses on our mental health and using the land to lead our well-being. All three guest speakers have some insight, experiences and resources to share. During this workshop we will have guest speakers and time for open sharing of resources and collaboration between participants.

We are honoured to have these three guest speakers:

Heidi Widmer

Heidi is a current graduate student in Environmental Education and Communication through Royal Roads University. As a resident of Canmore, Alberta, she is thrilled to share her passion for the natural world with children aged 4-12 through Forest Play; an outdoor nature connection program. As a former cross-country ski athlete and 2014 Canadian Olympian, Heidi’s experiences in the natural world have shifted from fast-paced to slow wonder. Heidi is deeply curious about how to make outdoor learning more accessible.

What might public education be if we were all deeply connected to ourselves, our communities and the natural world? She is exploring the use of creativity for nature connection as a thesis research project to commence in fall of 2021.

Fort McMurray Public School Division Land Based Learning Camp

A small group of Grades 7-12 students from Ecole McTavish High School attended two consecutive Land Based Learning Camps with local trapper Justin Bourque to hone their skills of traditional teachings.

Snare setting, fire starting, quincy building and fur trade history were just a few of the activities students took part in over the two days. Join Justin Bourqure; Metis Trapper, Angela Woods;Indigenous Lead for Fort McMurray School Division and Annalee Nutter; Assistant Superintendent of Education for a presentation on their Land Based Learning experience, from start to finish.

Cassandra Troughton - Educational Assistant with Edmonton Public Schools.

Working at Sherwood Elementary for the last 6 school years, Health & Wellness has always been a huge part of Cassandra's life. Working at Sherwood, she been able to play a key role in the health and well being of a lot of little lives there. Over the last few years Cassandra dug a lot into the interconnectedness of different aspects of wellness, specifically how mental health fits into this great puzzle and how important of a piece it really was. This led to the creation of the ‘Mindfulness Club’ at school about 4 years ago, and most recently, the ‘Mindfulness Calendar’- so our students could continue to fit in their Mindfulness practices, COVID friendly! When she's not at work, Cassandra can usually be found at home with her nose buried in books.
